Warehouse Forklift Maintenance
Forklifts require a proper maintenance program to help increase the equipments lifespan and is an essential factor in allowing the machinery to function safely and effectively. Completing forklift check ups regularly and performing preventive maintenance regularly will help to guarantee the efficient and safe use of the equipment.
Daily Checklist
The daily checklist is an important tool in any forklift maintenance program. These checklists will help to document any and all potential issues. They are required by the OSHA or the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The daily checklists could also be audited by OSHA during any routine inspection. Operators are required to complete the inspection from the start of their shift. If any major issues are found, the forklift is not to be put into service until the problem has been fixed.
Safety and Maintenance Go Hand-in-Hand
Each and every year approximately 100 individuals are injured in forklift mishaps within the USA. Statistics show that approximately 20,000 individuals would be seriously injured as a result of a forklift accident. This number translates to represent 54 individuals per day, 7 days a week, for the whole year. A lot of these mishaps can be easily prevented if the forklift had been properly maintained and serviced. In some circumstances, it might seem like a cost savings to delay or skip regular maintenance, however, these savings will pale in comparison to the cost of a single accident.
Items to be Serviced
In the owner's guidebook of every machinery, the manufacturer would include a maintenance schedule. These schedules would differ greatly, depending on the manufacturer and the type of machinery. Every schedule will consist of various basic things. For example, in a combustion engine, the oil filters and the engine oil would have to be periodically replaced. Hydraulic levels should be inspected as well. Be sure to inspect hoses for any indications of cracking. Other items include the electrical systems, the brakes and the transmission of the forklift.
